Your project concept is very interesting. You have a clear and focused understanding of what exactly you are going to portray.
Do you have an idea on how you plan to make it interactive?
Have you thought about working with vectorized imagery? Or do you plan on staying away from it?
Your target audience(s) seem to differ from each other quite significantly. It would be great if you are able to combined them both in your final production.
Depending on how in-depth you want to go into this, you might want to look at some of Clint Eastwood's western movies and see the usage of that "scratched film" look. Another suggestion might be to look at some foreign films too--they sometimes have more to offer than American films.
Great job on still connecting the original series to your updated version. By reincorporating the gunshots and whistling tune you will have achieved targeting both audiences.
Overall, you are on the right track and seem to have a great understanding of what you want to achieve. I'd really like to see your progress for this project.

*Nevermind on the Clint Eastwood films, I didn't realize that this one was one of his. But it still would help to look at the foreign films.
